Road trip tire tips
Check tire pressure when the tires are cold, before you set off, and again after a few hours of highway driving or a big change in temperature. Fill to the pressure on the sticker inside the driver's door, not the number on the tire. A loaded car for a road trip may need the higher "full load" pressure listed there.
Route planner questions
How do you find free air along my route?
We get driving directions between your start and end, then check every free air location we know of to see how far it is off the road you will be on. You choose how far off route you are willing to go.
How is the detour time estimated?
We assume you leave the route, drive to the stop and come back, on roads that wind a bit more than a straight line, at around 35 mph. It's a rough guide: an exit right off the highway is usually quicker, and a stop in town can take longer.
What does "Best every 50 miles" do?
It splits your trip into 50-mile stretches and keeps only the stop with the smallest detour in each one. It's the quickest way to plan a couple of tire checks on a long drive.
What does "Easy highway access" mean?
The stop is within about 1.5 miles of driving to or from an Interstate, based on real road distances. It's the quickest kind of stop on a highway trip.
Where do the gas prices come from?
They are weekly averages for regular gas from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, for your state or region. Prices at a single station can be higher or lower. When a driver reports a price at a stop in the last week, we show it on that listing.
Can I add a stop to Google Maps?
Yes. Tap "Add to route" on any stop to open Google Maps with your start, that stop and your destination already filled in.
